NAFLDの中には肝硬変 や肝癌に至ることのある進行性の一群があることが明らかにされ、これらは non-alcoholic steatohepatitis（NASH）と呼ばれ、比較的良性の経過をたどる ことの多いnonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL)とは区別して分類されている1,2,3)。
