Section 3-1 deep FoundationsMeMo to Designers 3-1 August 20131LRFDDRAFT3-1 deep FOUNDATIONSDeep FOUNDATIONS are structural components that in comparison to shallow FOUNDATIONS transfer load into deeper layers of earth materials. deep FOUNDATIONS , generically referred to herein as piles, can be driven piles, drilled shafts, micropiles, and grouted-in-place piles. Vertical ground anchors (Tie-downs) are also classified as deep FOUNDATIONS . Piles can be used in a group with a cap footing, or as a single pile /shaft supporting a column. Structure Design (SD) is responsible for calculating the pile factored design loads and for providing structural details. Geotechnical Services (GS) of Materials Engineering and Testing Services and Geotechnical Services (METS-GS) is responsible for providing foundation recommendations that include site seismicity, factored downdrag loads, pile tip elevations (based on the factored design loads provided by SD), construction recommendati
