Chapter 17: Amines and Amides We have discussed simple compounds containing the elements carbon, and hydrogen: Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic hydrocarbon are all carbon-hydrogen compounds. The carbon-hydrogen-oxygen compounds we have discussed include alcohols, phenols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and esters In this Chapter we extend our discussion to organic compounds that contain the element nitrogen. Two types of organic nitrogen-containing compounds are the focus of this Chapter Amines and Amides . Amines are carbon-hydrogen-nitrogen compounds, and Amides contain oxygen in addition to these elements. Amines and Amides occur widely in living organisms. Many of these naturally occurring compounds are very active physiologically.
