1 Forest characteristics Background paper to the Kotka V Expert Consultation 1 Introduction The term Forest encompasses a variety of different kinds of forests, both in terms of species composition, structure and degree of modification caused by humans, animals, diseases and natural disasters. A continuum exists from primary forests with no or no visible indications of past or present human activity to intensively managed plantation forests of introduced species, primarily managed for a single product, often on a relatively short rotation. Between these two extremes lies a range of scenarios, and there are no clear cut-off points between possible classes along the continuum. The request for information on Forest characteristics for FRA 2005 aimed to provide more detailed information on forests, in terms of their naturalness or the intensity of silviculture and management practices.
