BENTON New York Oxford OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS 1991 18 Guidelines for the Study of Brain-Behavior Relationships During Development Adele DIAMOND One way to study the relationship of brain maturation to the elaboration of cog-nitive abilities during development is to use a two-pronged approach: (I) Study the developmental progression of children's performance on behavioral tasks, and (2) link successful performance on those tasks uniquely to specific neural systems. I would like to suggest a set of guidelines for the conduct and evaluation of such research. I will use the work of myself and others on the development of cognitive abilities linked to dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to illustrate these guid-ing principles.
