At the time of Independence, Botswana was classified as one of the ten poorest countries in the world, and is now classified as one of the middle income countries. We have also over the years managed to reduce the level of Poverty in the country. Statistics show that people in the country living below the Poverty datum line have reduced from 59 percent in 1985/86 to 30 percent in 2002/03. Based on the statistics of 2010/11 statistics, percent of people are living below the Poverty datum line.
