The Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor was developed by Lettinga and his colleagues in Netherlands (Wageningen University) in late 1970s. The granule was reported by Young and McCarty (1969) in their anaerobic filter system first and was observed in South Africa during Lettinga’s trip before developing the first UASB reactor.
