origin of petroleumThe great compositional complexity of petroleums(this term includes both oil and gas) reflects thecombined effects of all processes involved in theorigin of petroleum accumulations and their fateduring long periods of geological time. Since relevantgeological and geochemical conditions under whichthese processes proceed can vary from place to place, the composition of petroleums are subject to greatvariations. The composition of petroleum containsmolecular signals which allow to unravel their originand geological history. As a general rule, the originof petroleum is never in the reservoir accumulationfrom which it is produced. Instead, petroleums haveexperienced a long series of processes prior toaccumulation in the reservoir. Petroleumaccumulation forms in sedimentary basins and can bediscovered by exploration, if the following geologicalconditions are met (Fig. 1): Occurrence of source rocks which generatepetroleums under proper subsurface temperatureconditions.
