OVERVIEWOver the last decade there has been significant growth in the use offiber-reinforced polymer(FRP)composite materialsas construction materials instructural engineering , which for the purposes of this book is defined as thefield of engineering that covers the analysis and design of primary, load-bearing structural members and systems in buildings and bridges by civil andstructural engineers. Also known asfiber-reinforced plastics, oradvancedcomposite materials(ACMs), these materials have proven themselves to bevaluable for use in the construction of new buildings and bridges and for theupgrading of existing buildings and bridges.
