Use of a frost tolerant section, an alternative to the insulated section, may be warranted where subgrade soil has low to moderate frost susceptibility or where groundwater is relatively deep and subgrade soil is not saturated most of the year. A frost tolerant section could be considered at the beginning of the project, from approximate station 508+00 to about station 520+00. Soil borings in this area encountered shallow weathered rock, between feet to 12 feet below ground surface.
