14 Ten Phonetic Syllables DAVID STUART Princeton University WITH THIS PAPER I wish to set forth the arguments for ten recent or new hieroglyphic readings-some building on the suggestions of my colleagues-in the hope that they will contribute to a fuller reconstruction of the phonetic syllabary of the ancient Maya script. The most recent summaries of progress in our knowledge of the Maya syllabary are those of Mathews (1984:311-314) and Bricker (1986:6-9). These reveal not only that our knowl-edge is far from complete, but also that there are disagreements among epigraphists concerning a number of the syllabic values attributed to various signs.
