Introduction This chapter is concerned with the use of ELECTROSTATIC instruments, such as described in Chapter 3, for PRACTICAL and experimental investigations and for MEASUREMENTS relevant to decisions on the suitability of materials and/or on the safety of situations. Where work is carried out in a commercial environment it is necessary to recognize that customers are rarely interested in the physics of what is going on, in the theory of operation or in the technology involved. Customers are primarily concerned to achieve a solution to their problem or application and one in which they can have confidence.
