BRIEFINGS ummaryThis briefing paper looks at the barriers to employment for people with both common and severe mental health problems and at the initiatives that are being undertaken by the public, voluntary and commercial sectors to support their efforts to find and sustain work. Too often people with common mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression, lose their jobs when they become unwell. Every day, opportunities to support people in work to get appropriate treatment and maintain their employment are being missed in workplaces across the UK. British business could save up to 8 billion a year if it managed mental health at work more effectively. People with severe and enduring mental health problems, such as schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder (manic depression), are less likely to be employed than any other group of disabled people.
