1A Model for QualitativeResearch DesignIn 1625, Gustav II, the king of Sweden, commissioned the construction of fourwarships to further his imperialistic goals. The most ambitious of these ships,named the Vasa,was one of the largest warships of its time, with 64 cannonsarrayed in two gundecks. On August 10, 1628, the Vasa,resplendent in itsbrightly painted and gilded woodwork, was launched in Stockholm Harborwith cheering crowds and considerable ceremony. The cheering was short-lived, however; caught by a gust of wind while still in the harbor, the shipsuddenly heeled over, foundered, and investigation was immediately ordered, and it became apparent that theballast compartment had not been made large enough to balance the two gun-decks that the king had specified.
