wealth - came into conflict with the rising power of Rome, which had taken over from the Greek colonies as Carthage's main rival in the central Mediterranean. Two long wars between Rome and Carthage ensued, from 264 to 241 B.C. and 219 to 201 (known as the Punic Wars). The result of the first war was the cession of Sicily to Rome.
