The Beginning Prompted by the September 11, 2001 (9/11) terrorist attacks on American soil, Northern Command's mission is to deter, prevent and defeat threats and aggression aimed at the United States, its territories, and interests. To this end personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are assigned to coordinate the protection of North America from external threats, drawing on the full capabilities of all military services, including the National Guard and Coast Guard, as necessary.
