AMERICAN SPEECH-LANGUAGE-HEARING ASSOCIATION convention chicago , NOVEMBER 2003 INVITED SEMINAR PRESENTATION Neurological and developmental foundations of speech acquisition Sharynne McLeod, PhD, Charles Sturt University, Australia Ken Bleile, PhD, University or Northern Iowa, USA A SUMMARY: BRAIN DEVELOPMENT AND THE ENVIRONMENT* A legacy of humanity s evolutionary past is that extensive brain development occurs as a child acquires speech during childhood. Brain development during childhood allows the brain to be shaped by the environment in which a child lives. Rather than possessing a genetic inheritance that includes a specialized body and mind fitted to a specific environmental niche, a human brain grows while exposed to the environment into which it is born.
