AMERICAN SPEECH-LANGUAGE-HEARING ASSOCIATION CONVENTION CHICAGO, NOVEMBER 2003 INVITED SEMINAR PRESENTATION Neurological and developmental foundations of speech acquisition Sharynne McLeod, PhD, Charles Sturt University, Australia Ken Bleile, PhD, University or Northern Iowa, USA A SUMMARY: BRAIN DEVELOPMENT AND THE ENVIRONMENT* A legacy of humanity s evolutionary past is that extensive brain development occurs as a child acquires speech during childhood. Brain development during childhood allows the brain to be shaped by the environment in which a child lives. Rather than possessing a genetic inheritance that includes a specialized body and mind fitted to a specific environmental niche, a human brain grows while exposed to the environment into which it is born. A child brings an ability to grasp complex patterns and a brain that grows through interacting with the environment.
