Whenever a restricted band is identified in serum protein electrophoresis, the next step is to run Immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) for definitive identification of specific M- proteins. IFE may also be directly ordered by the physician if there are sufficient indications that a plasmacytoma or lymphocytoma is present.
