Buteos like the red-tailed hawk are adapted for predation, with broad wings and tail for soaring fl ight, curved talons for grasping prey, large forward-rotated eyes for acute long-distance vision, and a sharp tearing beak. The red-tailed hawk s colouration, which is darker above and paler underneath, camoufl ages it from below.
