Nonessential variables were introduced in the 1974 rewrite of Section IX. The 1974 edition of Section IX stated that the purpose of the WPS was to provide directions for the welder to make the weld. The purpose of the procedure qualification record (PQR) was to demonstrate the properties of the weld under the conditions proposed in the WPS.
