Central Study Hour Lesson 1: The Prophetic Calling of Jeremiah *INTRODUCTION: HISTORICAL SETTING What was Jeremiah s world like when God called him to be His prophet in the 13th year of Josiah? That was about 627 or 626 Judah was a weak nation surrounded by other weak nations, such as Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre and Sidon. Judah s sister country to the north, Israel, had been destroyed 100 years earlier by the greatly feared Assyrian Empire, and all the surrounding nations had become vassal states in order to escape the same fate. Most of Judah had been destroyed, but God had delivered Jerusalem and King Hezekiah at that time. Babylon had already been made a province of Assyria, and even Egypt had to some degree become a vassal state. Under King Manasseh Judah went into idolatry and deep apostasy for over 50 years.
