Brussels, March 2017 CESIO RECOMMENDATIONSfor the harmonized classificationand labelling of surfactants2In the mid 1980 s, CESIO (Comit Europ en des Agents de Surface et de leurs Interm diaires Organiques - european Committee of organic surfactants and their organic intermediates) started to gather data for RECOMMENDATIONS of harmonized classification and labelling (C&L) of surfactants, according to the Dangerous Substances Directive (67/548/EEC). The purpose of such initiative was to establish a reliable database for the major volume and other important surfactants. The availability of hazard data, however, differs between the individual CESIO member and associated companies. It is therefore one of the major objectives of the CESIO RECOMMENDATIONS to fill the gaps and allow companies that do not hold appropriate data to classify and label their surfactants accordingly. CESIO activities on harmonized C&L are based on all studies currently available within CESIO member companies.
