The function of a gas furnace is to convert the chemical energy of the gas into heat (thermal energy), as shown in Table 4-1 and illustrated in Figure 4-3. Therefore, we have: Useful energy output = [Energy input] [Efficiency] = [1000 BTU (chemical energy)] [75ÊBTUÊ(thermalÊenergy) Ê100ÊBTUÊ(chemicalÊenergy)Ê] = 750 BTU (thermal energy)
