6 After a brain injury it is common to have times when a person feels down or depressed. Drinking and using drugs can make depression worse. After a brain injury there are a lot of changes and challenges that make life more difficult. That can be a cause for feeling down. Also, the effects of a brain injury itself can cause a depressed mood.
