SUMMARY OF CHANGES: Section 6404 of the Patient protection and Affordable Care Act (the Affordable Care Act) reduced the maximum period for submission of all Medicare fee-for-service claims to no more than 12 months, or 1 calendar year, after the date of service. As a result of the passage of this legislation, we are updating the internet-only Manual sections pertaining to the time limits for filing Medicare claims. EFFECTIVE DATE: January 1, 2010 IMPLEMENTATION DATE: February 22, 2011 Disclaimer for Manual changes only: The revision date and transmittal number apply only to red italicized material.

Prior to the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the Affordable Care Act), on March 23, 2010, a provider or supplier had from 15 to 27 months, depending on the date of service, to file a timely claim.
