CO2 & Temperature Effects 1 Effects of Elevated Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Concentration and Temperature on Forests Statement of the Problem Concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other trace gases have been increasing in the atmosphere due to human activity. By the 1980s, accumulating evidence suggested that increasing levels of these gases could produce higher global temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns. More information on how the biosphere controls atmospheric CO2 was needed to understand the Earth s carbon cycle. Foremost, an understanding of source-sink relations between the atmosphere and the various components of the biosphere was needed. Consequently, research was undertaken to delineate the relations between atmospheric CO2 concentrations, changes in global climate drivers, and responses of the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (EPA 1993).
