Kirwan, Sr., a graduate of Boston Technical High School, who went on to Northeastern University, had a keen interest in mechanical engineering. That interest brought him to Codman & Shurtleff, Inc., a manufacturer of general and specialty SURGICAL instruments and equipment. After 29 years at Codman, Mr. Kirwan decided to start his own November, 1979, New England SURGICAL Instruments was started by Mr. Kirwan and his wife, Jean. New England SURGICAL Instruments manufactured SURGICAL instruments for microsurgical specialties such as neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and ear, nose and throat.
