Developing Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) The Role of RPL In the Context of the National Skills Strategy Upskilling Objectives April 2011 Developing Recognition of Prior Learning 1 April 2011 Foreword Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is of considerable interest to the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs in the context of monitoring progress on the National Skills Strategy. RPL has also been recommended in EGFSN sectoral reports such as the Wholesale and Retail sector as a mechanism to assist in upskilling staff within enterprises and in delivering education and training more effectively. This report, initiated at the request of the Department of Education and Skills as part of the National Skills Strategy implementation statement, examines how RPL can be further developed in Ireland, particularly in its role in upskilling and engaging people in education and training. RPL is about giving value to the Skills and competencies people have gained, whether acquired through formal or informal Learning .
