Founders Hall 607 Learning Objectives: For the last two hundred years, democratic forms of government have gradually spread across the globe. However, democratic transitions have generally not been smooth or stable. Moreover, in recent years, some scholars have argued that we are seeing a resurgence of authoritarian regimes. This has raised several puzzles what are the basic forces that drive democratization? Are some democratic institutions more stable than others?
