Summary Human well-being and progress toward sustainable development are vitally dependent upon improving the management of Earth's Ecosystems to ensure their conservation and sustainable use. But while demands for ecosystem services such as food and clean water are growing, Human actions are at the same time diminishing the capability of many eco- systems to meet these demands. Sound policy and management interventions can often reverse ecosystem degradation and enhance the contributions of Ecosystems to Human well-being, but knowing when and how to intervene requires substantial understanding of both the ecological and the social systems involved. Better information cannot guaran- tee improved decisions, but it is a prerequisite for sound decision-making.
