SOLUTION OVERVIEW ELASTIC CLOUD STORAGE (ECS) FOR ARCHIVING Tiering to the CLOUD NOT ALL data IS CREATED EQUAL The capacity of a digital archive is ever growing and with aging data becoming less valuable over time, it s imperative for organizations to design a tiered archive approach that fits the needs specific to their industry. STORAGE tiering can be defined by the process in which aged, inactive data is moved from highly performant yet more expensive Tier 1 resources over to a lower cost form of STORAGE media. This process is purely driven by economics in an attempt to lower STORAGE costs and optimize existing infrastructure resources. Organizations today want tiering to be fully automated and managed by the policies that they set being that it s a complex, reoccurring activity that requires different levels of performance, protection, etc. CHOOSING THE RIGHT ARCHIVING APPROACH There are four main approaches to ARCHIVING : in-place (passive archive), archive via backup, active archive, and long term preservation archive.
