Engineer Licensing Requirements by State It is not required to obtain a license to become an Engineer ; however, some positions may require a Professional Engineer , PE, designation. The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, NCEES, develops and scores the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and the Professional Engineering (PE) exam.
