This pressure rise is caused by themomentum of the fluid; therefore, the pressure rise increases withthe velocity of the liquid, the length of the system from the fluidsource, or with an increase in the speed with which it is started orstopped. Examples of situations where hydraulic shock can occurare valves, which are opened or closed quickly, or pumps, whichstart with an empty discharge line. Hydraulic shock can even occurif a high speed wall of liquid (as from a starting pump) hits a sudden change of direction in the piping, such as an elbow.
Therefore, 2" schedule 80 PVC pipe is acceptable for this application. The total pressure at any time in a pressure-type system (operating plus surge or water hammer) should not exceed 150 percent of the pressure rating of the system.
