Gender role depictions of theprince and princess characters were examined with a focuson their behavioral characteristics and climactic outcomesin the films. Results suggest that the prince and princesscharacters differ in their portrayal of traditionally mas-culine and feminine characteristics, these gender roleportrayals are complex, and trends towards egalitariangender roles are not linear over time. Content codinganalyses demonstrate that all of the movies portray somestereotypical representations of gender, including themost recent film,ThePrincessandtheFrog. Althoughboth the male and female roles have changed over time inthe Disney Princess line, the male characters exhibit moreandrogyny throughout and less change in their gender roleIntroductionThe Disney Princess line was created in 2001 as anadvertising and marketing campaign targeted toward younggirls (Orenstein2006).
