The Port which was looked upon initially as a mono commodity coal port dedicated to handling Thermal Coal requirements of Tamilnadu Generation and Distribution Corporation LIMITED (TANGEDCO) formerly Tamilnadu Electricity Board (TNEB), has over the period developed as a multi cargo port. It has a distinction of being the only corporate port amongst the Major ports administered by the Central Government.
