The Murray-Darling Basin extends across one-seventh of the continent and contains 20 major rivers. It is the economic powerhouse of rural Australia, producing about 40% of the agricultural income and contains about of the irrigated land in the country. It is home to around two million people and directly supports another million including those in Adelaide and much of South Australia.
