1. duke University Hospital Fire/Life Safety Management Plan 2021. Introduction One of the most serious issues facing duke University Hospital , Medical Center, Clinics and the health Systems is the threat of fire. The risk of fire increases and decreases dependent upon facility design, occupancy, fire protection system availability, and the operations conducted in each facility. The risk of fire increases substantially due to some operations which may be conducted inside facilities use of flammable liquids and gases, clinical research, and other laboratory processes that use hazardous substances. In addition, the use of specialized equipment such as lasers and other ignition sources utilized in oxygen-enriched atmospheres, increases the threat of fire. The threat of fire is much more critical in patient care areas due to the fact that patients are often times incapable of self-preservation.

The Fire & Life Safety Office conducts periodic assessments for compliance with the Life Safety Code and is highly effective at identifying, and minimizing the risk of fire in all Duke Health System, University, and Medical Center properties.
