Frequently Asked Questions on Directive 2012/19/EU on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) April 2014 1 Foreword The purpose of this Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document is to clarify certain aspects of Directive 2012/19/EU (hereafter referred to as the Directive ), which entered into force on 13 August 2012 and which Member States were required to transpose into national law by 14 February 2014. At that time, Directive 2002/96/EC (the old WEEE Directive ) was repealed. The document is principally intended to help competent public authorities and economic operators interpret the provisions of the Directive in order to ensure compliance with the Directive s requirements. However, the Directive being addressed only to the Member States, the rights and obligations for private parties exclusively flow from the measures enacted by the authorities of the Member States to implement it.
