Many elderly patients seen by surgical and medical specialists and subspecialists have significant cognitive impairment, often undiagnosed. Unrecognized cognitive impairment is a risk factor for medication non-adherence, poor compliance with behavioral recommendations, difficulty navigating the health care system, and caregiver stress.
