David McNeill, University of Chicago As a field of study, gesture has become energized in recent years. There is now an organization (International Society for gesture Studies) and a journal ( gesture , Adam Kendon and Cornelia M ller, founding editors).2 In preparing this article, I have aimed to balance the empirical basics of gestures with a theoretical perspective from which to regard gestures and see what insights they bring to an understanding of the nature of language.
