They were almost certainlypart of a very old oral tradition before writing developed during the Shang dynasty ( ) and they continue to be popular in China today. Ghosts were taken very seriously by theancient Chinese. They had the power to harm whether one believed in them or laughed a person died their soul traveled across a bridge to the afterlife.
