Good Practices in Supporting Supreme Audit institutions FOREWORD 1 Foreword In today s uncertain global economic and financial environment, more than ever, governments are called upon by their citizens to account for how public funds are spent and are helping to deliver results and better public services. Supreme Audit institutions (SAIs), as the lead public sector Audit organisations focusing on accountability and transparency of public funds, are uniquely placed to contribute to building and sustaining stronger and more effective accountability mechanisms between governments and their citizens. In developing countries, SAIs play an important role in strengthening public sector institutions by confirming that controls are operating effectively, identifying waste and suggesting ways in which government organisations can operate better.
