GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTING EMPLOYMENT REFERENCE CHECKS Prepared by the policy development Office Department of Personnel Administration August, 1993 One of the most valuable methods of gathering information about job applicants is REFERENCE checking. Supervisors have a dual role in the REFERENCE checking process. As a prospective employer, you must seek job-related information regarding job applicants in order to make an informed hiring decision. Conversely, as a current or previous supervisor you may be required to respond to REFERENCE check inquiries from prospective supervisors regarding your current or past employees.
