Historical Data 33 Historical Data34 Crime and Justice Atlas 2000 The arrival of the new millennium provides an opportunity to reflect on the past andconsider the challenges of the future. The 20th century saw remarkable changes inthe administration of justice, and the 21st century will undoubtedly bring a host ofnew issues and challenges. As justice decisionmakers and administrators consider these fu-ture issues, it is helpful to look at the past for clues as to what the new century may the National Data and State Data components of the Crime and Justice Atlas 2000, weexamine statistical trends over the past 20 25 years in law enforcement, sentencing, andcorrections. This Historical Data section examines long-term trends that span the betterpart of the 20th century.
