Red Bank, NJ, 07701 USA 2 ABSTRACT Nitrile Rubber ( NBR ) remains one of the most popular oilfield elastomers. More recently, hydrogenated nitrile Rubber ( hnbr ) is being accepted in its place on account of its similar toughness and improved stability in the presence of heat and reactive chemical species. However, carbon dioxide (a naturally occurring gas that is frequently encountered in hydrocarbon environments) presents challenges for the NBR class of polymers.
