How To Write a Good PRD. IMPORTANT NOTE: I provide this document here primarily for historical purposes. It was written in 2005 to reflect best practices for the prior decades. I have not advocated the use of PRD's for many years, starting roughly in 2007. It is not that PRD's themselves are so bad, it is that if the product manager is spending his or her time writing the PRD, then he or she is unlikely to be doing the real job of product. There are many articles in the SVPG archive that describe the product discovery process, methods and techniques that have replaced the PRD.
