Information theory : A Tutorial IntroductionJames V Stone, Psychology Department, University of Sheffield, s mathematical theory of communication defines fundamental limits onhow much Information can be transmitted between the different components of anyman-made or biological system. This paper is an informal but rigorous Introduction tothe main ideas implicit in Shannon s theory . An annotated reading list is provided forfurther IntroductionIn 1948, Claude Shannon published a paper calledA Mathematical theory ofCommunication[1].This paper heralded a transformation in our understanding ofinformation. Before Shannon s paper, Information had been viewed as a kind of poorlydefined miasmic fluid. But after Shannon s paper, it became apparent that Information isa well-defined and, above all, measurablequantity. Indeed, as noted by Shannon,A basic idea in Information theory is that Information can be treated very muchlike a physical quantity, such as mass or Shannon, xyMessagesFigure 1: The communication channel.
