141 CHAPTER 7 Ingroups and OutgroupsThis chapter introduces some key elements from an intergroup communication perspec-tive (see Giles & Watson, 2008), one of many different ways of exploring intercultural rela-tions. This approach studies the effects of talking to someone from another culture based solely on that individual s membership in that group, rather than talking to the person based on individuating information, that is, unique characteristics, such as personality or tem-perament. The former would be considered a highly intergroup interaction, whereas the latter would be much more inter-individual in nature (Tajfel & Turner, 1986). Intercultural encounters can be either of these extremes and, sometimes, with the same person on dif-ferent occasions.
