Research ReportIntervention for children with severe speechdisorder: A comparison of two approachesSharon Crosbie, Alison Holm and Barbara DoddSchool of Education, Communication and Language Sciences, University ofNewcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK(Received 22 September 2004; accepted 17 March 2005)AbstractBackground: children with speech disorder are a heterogeneous group ( interms of severity, types of errors and underlying causal factors). Much researchhas ignored this heterogeneity, giving rise to contradictory Intervention studyfindings. This situation provides clinical motivation to identify the deficits in thespeech-processing chain that underlie different subgroups of developmentalspeech disorder. Intervention targeting different deficits should result in adifferential response to Intervention across these :To evaluate the effect of two different types of therapy on speechaccuracy and consistency of word production of children with consistent andinconsistent speech & Procedures:Eighteen children (aged 4;08 6;05 years) with severespeech disorder participated in an Intervention study comparing phonologicalcontrast and core vocabulary therapy.
